Rebuilding Together, Inc is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping low-income homeowners, through home renovation and repair.
National and Local History
In 1973, caring people
in
Midland,Texas took action when they discovered that
many of their low-income neighbors were living
in unsafe conditions. The community rallied
together and in a unique one-day event
reminiscent of the barn-raising tradition of
America's past,
they set to work rehabilitating the
deteriorating homes. In 1988, the national
office was established in
Washington,D.C. Since then, the program has
become the largest volunteer home rehabilitation
organization serving 1800 communities
nationwide.
The Greater Des Moines affiliate had it's first
Rebuilding Day in 1995. To date, we have
acheived our mission by revitalizing 448 homes
and non-profit facilities.
How the Process Works
Homeowner referrals come from other non-profit agencies, local police departments, government agencies, social service organizations, faith-based organizations and private individuals. Applicants are screened for eligibility and must meet low-income guidelines and cannot perform the work themselves. Preference is given to the elderly, disabled and/or families with dependent children.
Volunteer teams are assigned to each selected home. Rebuilding Together provides the materials and supplies, along with a house captain. Teams match the skill level of their volunteers with the work that needs to be done. Major projects usually require the services of skilled trades people and experienced construction professionals. However, many of the projects require basic home improvement work, such as painting, caulking, drywall & window repairs, and yard work, which can be accomplished by unskilled volunteers.
Our next Rebuilding Day will take place on Saturday, May 3, 2008.
